Carpal tunnel syndrome is a pain in the hand caused by compression of a nerve in the wrist called the median nerve. The median nerve and tendons run from the forearm through a small “tunnel” in the wrist to the hand. The small space or tunnel in the wrist is called the carpal tunnel. The median nerve controls the thumb and fingers of the hand.
What are the symptoms?
Pain from carpal tunnel syndrome can be from mild to extreme. In the most severe cases carpal tunnel can be debilitating and can prevent people from performing necessary tasks at work. Carpal tunnel syndrome creates pain most frequently between the thumb and index finger. The pain can also occur anywhere below the elbow, in the wrist and hand.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve. Anything that makes the space in the wrist (carpal tunnel) smaller or causes swelling in the area creates this pressure.
Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include:
- Illness
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
- Repetitive hand movements w/ bad posture
- Wrist injuries
- Smoking
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatments
Many times carpal tunnel syndome is very mild at first but gets significantly worse over time. Mild cases can generally be treated with home care including:
- Discontinue or significantly reduce the activities that cause the pain
- Take consistent and longer periods of rest between activities
- Ice your wrists
- Keep your wrists in a neutral position
If the pain does not subside within 1-2 weeks see a doctor. Chiropractic care is extremely effective in these cases.
